Observing patient involvement in shared decision making:
a measurement tool

How to achieve patient involvement is difficult in clinical practice. Many studies show that patients are infrequently involved in decisions. Although there is agreement that decision making with patients should be ‘shared’, the exact nature of that process is as yet unclear.

OPTION is a tool that enables progress in this field and measures the extent to which clinicians involve patients in decision making.

The OPTION tool has been developed by Professor Glyn Elwyn, Professor Adrian Edwards, Professor Kerry Hood, Dr Mike Robling (Cardiff University, UK), Dr Michel Wensing and Professor Richard Grol (Radboud University Medical Centre, the Netherlands).

Using the OPTION tool

For further background information about the development of the OPTION tool, please visit the 'Publications' page of this site.

A training pack has been produced to support users of the OPTION tool. Further information can be found in the 'Training Pack' page.
